This seminar explores some of the most influential debates in social and political thought from the Enlightenment to the early twentieth century. Thinkers engaged in a dialogue about reason, progress, revolution, and industrialization, while confronting the upheavals these forces unleashed. Students will trace how their competing visions attempted to define a new social and political order, and how the tensions they left behind continue to resonate in our own time. Restricted to first-year students. Not eligible for CR/NCR option.
