NMC385H1: Islamic Law in Historical Perspective and Contemporary Debate

The course surveys the history, theory, and doctrines of Islamic law, and addresses issues that are at the center of public debate across the world. Students will closely read primary sources, provide oral and written responses, and reflect on their own positionality vis-à-vis debates on Islamic law. The course introduces students to the dynamics of Islamic legal reasoning in a historical and comparative perspective.
