FSL110Y1: Intensive Elementary French

An intensive introductory course that allows motivated students to progress quickly towards development of intermediate proficiency in one semester. No prior French experience is assumed. In addition to regular homework, this course includes weekly asynchronous practice exercises and assignments to complement in-class learning.

This course is appropriate for students who have minimal prior experience with French and who hope to gain communicative competence quickly in order to use French in their academic, professional and/or personal lives. It is also open to motivated beginners, especially those who are already proficient in another Romance language or French-based Creole.

Students will develop proficiency in written and spoken French comprehension and production, as well as gain an introduction to a variety of French-speaking cultures. Students who have completed this course successfully will be tested to confirm eligibility to take FSL122H1 in the following semester.

This course can be counted towards the Minor in French Language. During the pilot phase, please contact the Department of French (french.undergraduate@utoronto.ca) for details.

This course is not eligible for the CR/NCR option.

FSL102H1, FSL120H1, FSL121Y1, FSL122H1, FSL 200+ level courses, placement in FSL120H1, FSL122H1 or FSL200+ level courses based on the results of the French Placement Test.
