CHM135H1: Chemistry: Physical Principles

36L/12T/18P

CHM135H1 and CHM136H1 cannot be taken in the same session.

This course offers an introduction to fundamental physical principles of chemistry, with an emphasis on the structure and behaviour of matter. Students will gain tools from classroom and laboratory experiences to explain why chemical reactions occur, how fast they proceed, and how energy is transformed. Topics will include quantum theory and electronic structure, bonding and intermolecular forces, gases, thermochemistry, kinetics, equilibria, acids and bases, buffers and solubility, thermodynamics (including phase transitions and vapour pressure), and electrochemistry. This course is recommended for students in life and health science programs. (Lab Materials Fee: approximately $27).
