VIC138H1: Surveillance Scandals in Global Politics

24S

While surveillance by state and non-state actors is a pervasive but often hidden feature of contemporary society, what happens when secret surveillance programs are suddenly exposed? In this course, students will explore how surveillance practices are uncovered and debated, and the impact these revelations have on governments, businesses, and civil society. Topics may include high-profile whistleblowers' revelations of government global surveillance programs, the use of mercenary spyware by repressive regimes, debates over the ties between governments and social media platforms, and/or police combing through social media to identify political activists.
