This course offers a concentrated study of the contemporary campus novel as a specialized literary subgenre where coming-of-age stories collide with institutional understandings of identity, activism and societal responsibilities. In this seminar, students will analyze the literary roots of campus novels across multiple genres, engage with the social contexts that influence education, and write their own campus short story. Literary selections from this course will be read in conversation with U of T’s own campus history and surrounding environmental impact, considering the role of post-secondary institutions in shaping our collective futures.
