The course introduces students to the Late Egyptian dialect attested from the New Kingdom and spanning the period from ca. 1300 to 700 BCE. Students will be introduced to grammar, syntax, and orthography through readings of original texts; these will include stories, letters, business documents, and formal inscriptions. Standard grammar and dictionaries are supplemented by the instructor’s notes and handouts. Students will also be provided with a basic introduction to the hieratic script through contemporary manuscripts.
