This course explores the history, development, structure and sociolinguistic context of select Creole languages. Students will learn to identify key grammatical features of these languages, critically assess theories of Creole genesis and typology, and discuss how interactions among Creoles and other languages can impact sociolinguistic context. Topics may include the sociohistorical development of Creole languages, the structure of the sound systems, vocabulary and word formation, key grammatical features, sentence structure, and code switching. Students will explore these languages by examining music, literature, social media posts and corpora.
