This class is a survey of the mythology, folklore, oral poetry and epic traditions of the Nordic region, including Norse, Finnish, and indigenous Sámi literature. We will trace key themes (e.g., heroism, the gods, cosmology, and colonization) and figures (e.g., Thor, Odin, Loki, and Freya), from the Viking Age in the early medieval period to modern receptions and adaptations. Core texts will include the Sagas, the Eddas, the Kalevala as well various legends and folk tales. All readings will be in English.
